Abstract

Being a part of mass communication, movie has the ability to cover various social layers and able to capture reality. Therefore, movies can be called a tool for social construct. One of the realities that exist in society is social anxiety issues, which often happened in teenagers. One of the movie that captures this reality is The Edge of Seventeen. This research aims to identify and capture how social anxiety in adolescents is depicted in terms of physical, psychological and cognitive symptoms in The Edge of Seventeen movie. The method used is a qualitative method with content analysis techniques using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic theory model. The data collection techniques used were documentation studies and literature studies. The results of this research show that there are characteristic physical symptoms in this film which include scenes of shaking body parts and blushing. The characteristic psychological symptoms include avoidance behavior, nervousness and halted speech. Characteristic cognitive symptoms include excessive self-awareness, self-caution and often putting oneself in a degrading manner.

Additional Information:	Menjadi salah satu bentuk dari komunikasi massa, film memiliki kemampuan untuk mencakup berbagai macam lapisan sosial dan menggambarkan realitas. Oleh karenanya, film bisa disebut sebagai alat kontruksi sosial. Salah satu realitas yang ada di masyarakat ialah isu kecemasan sosial, yang sering terjadi terhadap golongan masyarakat berusia remaja. Salah satu film yang menangkap realitas ini ialah The Edge of Seventeen. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi dan menangkap bagaimana kecemasan sosial pada remaja digambarkan dari segi gejala fisik, psikologi, dan kognitif dalam film The Edge of Seventeen. Metode yang digunakan ialah metode kualitatif dengan teknik analisis isi teori semiotika model Charles Sanders Peirce. Teknik pengumpulan data yang dilakukan ialah studi dokumentasi dan studi pustaka. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat ciri gejala fisik dalam film ini yang meliputi adegan anggota tubuh bergemetar dan wajah merona. Lalu ciri gejala psikologi yang meliputi perilaku penghindaran, gugup dan bicara yang tersendat-sendat. Dan, ciri gejala kognitif yang meliputi kesadaran diri dan kewaspadaan diri yang berlebihan serta sering merendahkan diri sendiri.
