Abstract
Learning using the Problem Based Learning (PBL) approach using psychological tools is believed to reduce students' mathematical cognitive load. The research was conducted at SMP Negeri 32 Tangerang City in the academic year 2023/2024. The study aims to determine whether the students' mathematical cognitive load and the decrease in mathematical cognitive load of students with Problem Based Learning (PBL) approach using psychological tools is better than students with Problem Based Learning (PBL) approach either seen from initial mathematical ability. The method used in this research is a combination method with concurrent embedded design where quantitative data collection and qualitative data are collected at one time. The research instruments were initial mathematical ability test instruments, mathematical cognitive load, and interview guidelines. The results showed that mathematical cognitive load with Problem Based Learning (PBL) approach using psychological tools was not better than students with Problem Based Learning (PBL) approach and there was a significant decrease in mathematical cognitive load with Problem Based Learning (PBL) approach using psychological tools.
