Abstract

Speaking skill has been claimed to be essential skill in the language learning. The claim has been expanded with the assumption that speaking is interactive process of constructing meaning to succeed language learning. However, for EFL students, it is difficult to be mastered because of some factors. The factors are inhibition, nothing to say, low or uneven participant in practice, and mother tongue-use. Thus, this research tried to apply Guided Learning in teaching speaking. The objective of the research is to describe the process of implementation Guided Learning in teaching speaking and to describe the students’ response toward the implementation of Guided Learning in teaching speaking at the eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Bojonegara-Serang Regency. The researcher conducted this research at the eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Bojonegara with the number of the students was 30. It was qualitative research. The researcher designed this research as a case study. The research started at 01st to 25th April 2015. The instruments utilized in order for data collection were semi- structured interview, researcher’s observation, and documentation. The finding data showed that the process of implementation Guided Learning was successful. Moreover, the implementation of Guided Learning in teaching speaking got a good response from students. It is because Guided Learning process gave many objectives for them such as social, interactive, scaffolding, self-management, etc. This research suggests that Guided Learning is potential to be applied in teaching speaking as a foreign language.
