Abstract

The dissimilar welding between stainless steel and carbon steel has been widely used in the automotive industry, railway frame, manhole of pressure vessel, piping system and many other engineering fields. AISI304L is one type of austenitic stainless steel which has high toughness at low temperature, good corrosion resistance, good machinability and good weldability, while structural steel [SS] 400 has a high strength properties and good machinability. However, AISI 304L becomes brittle when it is welded due to precipitation of chromium carbide (Cr23C6) at austenite grain boundary. This precipitation occurs due to slow welded-cooling rate from temperature of 900 oC to 450 oC. On the other hand, SS400 excessive hardening in HAZ if high welded cooling rate. This research aims to determine the impact of preheating and PWHT as a reference in improving the mechanical properties of AISI304L and SS400 welded joints.Three specimens AISI 304L and SS400 (specimens A, B and C) are welded using SMAW with a filler of ER309L, voltage 20 volt, current 90 ampere, and welding speed of 272 mm/min. Specimen A was welded without additional treatment, specimen B was preheated before welding, and specimen C was preheated before welding and PWHT after welding. Furthermore, each specimen is tested for hardness, chemical composition test, tensile test and micro structure observation. In general, additional treatment with preheating and PWHT are able to improve their mechanical properties of welding joint.

Additional Information: Pengelasan dissimilar antara baja tahan karat dan baja karbon telah secara luas pada sektor industri otomotif, rangka kereta api, manhole bejana tekan, sistem perpipaan dan lain sebagainya. AISI304L adalah salah satu jenis baja tahan karat austenitik yang memiliki sifat ketangguhan yang tinggi pada temperatur rendah, ketahanan korosi yang baik, mampu mesin dan mampu las yang baik. Sedangkan structural steel [SS]400 memiliki sifat kekuatan tarik yang tinggi dan mampu mesin yang baik. Akan tetapi, AISI304L akan menjadi getas ketika dilakukan pengelasan yang menghasilkan endapan kromium karbida (Cr23C6) pada batas butir austenit. Endapan kromium karbida terjadi ketika pendinginan lambat dari temperatur 900 oC ke 450oC. Pada sisi lain, SS400 mengalami peningkatan kekerasan jika dilakukan pendinginan cepat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui dampak dari perlakuan preheating dan PWHT sebagai acuan dalam memperbaiki sifat mekanik sambungan las AISI304L dan SS400. Tiga spesimen AISI304L dan SS400 (spesimen A, B dan C) dilas menggunakan SMAW dengan filler ER309L, tegangan 20 volt, arus 90 amper, dan kecepatan pengelasan 272 mm/menit. Spesimen A dilas tanpa perlakuan tambahan, spesimen B diberikan pemanasan awal sebelum dilas, dan spesimen C diberikan pemanasan awal sebelum dilas dan PWHT setelah dilas. Selanjutnya, masing-masing sepesimen dilakukan uji kekerasan, uji komposisi, uji tarik dan pengamatan struktur mikro. Secara umum, pemberian perlakuan tambahan dengan preheating dan PWHT mampu memperbaiki sifat mekanik sambaungan las.
