Abstract

The aim of the research was to find out the perception of the second semester students of the English Department at Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University regarding the features of the Tophonetics application in improving their pronunciation in fricatives. In conducting the research, the researcher used a phenomenological qualitative research. The researcher used purposive sampling on selecting the participants who have experienced using Tophonetics and were willing to be participants in this study. Five participants are as the informants of this study. In collecting the data, the researcher utilized semi structured in-depth interviews that was done through online meeting in Zoom. The questions consist of three main open ended questions and are dug deeper by the researcher. Then, the data that was obtained by the researcher is analyzed by using the theory by Stevick-Colaizzi-Kenn which was described by Moustakas (1994) technique of data analyzing. The researcher found that there are four themes, which are positive perception, negative perception, the features of Tophonetics, and the obstacles of using Tophonetics. The results of this study are three students delivered positive perceptions regarding the features of Tophonetics in improving students‟ pronunciation and two students delivered negative perceptions. The conclusion of this research is that the students have positive perceptions regarding the features of Tophonetics in improving their pronunciation, which means this is a good application in improving pronunciation. Therefore, it can be suggested to other students and other English pronunciation teacher.

Additional Information: Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk mengetahui persepsi mahasiswa semester dua dari Jurusan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa tentang fitur aplikasi Tophonetics dalam meningkatkan pengucapannya dalam frikatif. Dalam melakukan penelitian, peneliti menggunakan kualitatif fenomenologis riset. Peneliti menggunakan purposive sampling dalam memilih partisipan yang telah berpengalaman menggunakan Tophonetics dan bersedia menjadi partisipan dalam penelitian ini. Lima partisipan menjadi informan penelitian ini. Dalam mengumpulkan data, Peneliti menggunakan wawancara mendalam semi terstruktur yang dilakukan melalui online bertemu di Zoom. Pertanyaannya terdiri dari tiga pertanyaan utama terbuka dan adalah digali lebih dalam oleh peneliti. Kemudian, data yang diperoleh peneliti adalah dianalisis dengan menggunakan teori Stevick-Colaizzi-Kenn yang dijelaskan oleh Moustakas (1994) teknik analisis data. Peneliti menemukan bahwa ada empat tema, yaitu persepsi positif, persepsi negatif, ciri-ciri Tofonetik, dan kendala penggunaan Tofonetik. Hasil penelitian ini adalah tiga orang mahasiswa menyampaikan persepsi positif mengenai fitur-fitur Tophonetics pada meningkatkan pengucapan siswa dan dua siswa menyampaikan persepsi negatif. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah siswa memiliki persepsi yang positif mengenai ciri-ciri Tophonetics dalam meningkatkan pengucapannya, apa artinya ini adalah aplikasi yang bagus dalam meningkatkan pengucapan. Oleh karena itu, dapat disarankan kepada siswa lain dan guru pengucapan bahasa Inggris lainnya.
