Abstract

The primary goal of this study is to identify and draw attention to one important finding: there is a perception gap between lecturer and students about the use of Google Translate as a translation tool. The research clarifies this issue in a translation class where the lecturer places restrictions on its use, in contrast to students who still use Google Translate through a thorough case study. Twenty students and one lecturer from Universitas Islam Negeri Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten are participating in the study, which uses a qualitative approach. Using a variety of data collection techniques, including surveys, interviews, and observation, the study presents striking findings that highlight the differences in how lecturer and students perceive Google Translate. These findings, which are based on a number of variables, provide insightful information on the differing opinions that lecturer and students have about the application of machine translation, that are based on indicators that are: satisfaction, knowledge, past experience, expectation, attitude, intention, need, and interest. In the end, by clarifying the difficulties and possible benefits of implementing machine translation in educational contexts, this research hopes to improve curriculum and pedagogical approaches.
