Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out whether the use of LearnEnglish podcast by British Council is effective or not in improving students’ speaking skill at the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Pandeglang. This research used quantitative method by implementing quasi-experimental as the research design. The population of this research was eleventh grades students of SMAN 1 Pandgelang. The sample involved two classes namely the XI IPA 1 as the experimental consisting of 31 students and the XI IPA 7 as the control class consisting of 32 students. The data was collected through speaking test; pre-test and post-test. The result indicated that the value of tcount was 16,260 and ttable was 1,697. tcount (16,260) ≥ ttable (1,697) with a degree of freedom (df) = 30 with the level of significance 0,05. This indicated that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. In conclusion, the use of LearnEnglish podcast by British Council is effective in improving students’ speaking skill at the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Pandeglang.

Additional Information: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah penggunaan podcast LearnEnglish dari British Council efektif atau tidak dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa kelas XI SMAN 1 Pandeglang. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif dengan menggunakan desain penelitian kuasi eksperimen. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XI SMAN 1 Pandeglang. Sampel penelitian ini terdiri dari dua kelas, yaitu kelas XI IPA 1 sebagai kelas eksperimen yang terdiri dari 31 siswa dan kelas XI IPA 7 sebagai kelas kontrol yang terdiri dari 32 siswa. Data dikumpulkan melalui tes berbicara; pre-test dan post-test. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa nilai thitung sebesar 16.260 dan ttabel sebesar 1.697. Thitung (16.260) ≥ ttabel (1.697) dengan derajat kebebasan (df) = 30 dan tingkat signifikansi 0,05. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa hipotesis nol (H0) ditolak dan hipotesis alternatif (Ha) diterima. Kesimpulannya, penggunaan podcast LearnEnglish dari British Council efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa kelas XI SMAN 1 Pandeglang.
