Abstract

This research aimed to identify the common types of code-mixing and codeswitching and explore the reasons for using mixed languages in an Indonesian literary work. The data were taken from Windy Ariestanty’s travelogue entitled Life Traveler. This study employed using qualitative research method by implementing a content analysis research design. The researcher gathered the data by skimming and scanning each book chapter to find the code-mixing and code-switching phenomena and categorized them into the framework developed by Muysken (2000), Hoffman (2014), and Bhatia and Ritchie (2013). This study found that the type of code-mixing that was dominantly used in Life Traveler was Insertion (62.70%) and the common type of code-switching that appeared in the book was Inter-sentential code-switching (52.27%). This study also explored the reasons for using code-mixing and code-switching in Life Traveler, which was dominated by Language attitude, dominance, and security factors (47.06%).
