Abstract

ABSTRACT The object of this research was the students learning spelling English words related to their spelling English errors. Those learning strategies can be inferred from characteristic of those errors. The research used the descriptive method. The data were the characters of students spelling error. This research was carried out at the fifth grades of SDN Sindangpanon 1 Pasarkemis Tangerang, Banten. The underlying technique in obtaining the data demand the students to do a try out and dictation test in which each students write the answer based on the keywords that a teacher gave. The result of the analysis reveal that the students spelling error are error related to the competency of the use of correct word pronunciation, consonant competency using analytical construct, it is inferred that the strategies employed by the students are interference, transfer , generalization, and over implication with the tendency of using word pronunciation as the basis for spelling the word. The result of the research reveals that the students make a great numbers of errors in their spelling words. They committed 618 error or (12.36%). The biggest error were found in addition type, with 441 error or (22.05%), and the omission, with 130 errors or (6.50%), in the third position was substitution, with 48 errors or (2.40%).
