Abstract

The development of composite materials in the field of material engineering is very advanced, this has encouraged the use of natural resources (woven ramie) to develop better composite materials. The purpose of this study was to determine the tensile and impact strengths of ramie woven-reinforced composites with variations in the polymer matrix between polyester resins and epoxy resins, as well as the comparison between the use of these two resins on the tensile and impact strengths of ramie woven-reinforced composites. Composites use 30% fiber volume fraction as reinforcement and 70% volume fraction for each resin as matrix. The specimens were made using ASTM D638 standardization for tensile testing and ASTM E23 for impact testing. The test results show that the greatest tensile strength is obtained from the use of epoxy resin which is 65.7 N/mm2 and the average tensile strength reaches 52.475 N/mm2, while the use of polyester resin gets the largest value of 54.3 N/mm2 and an average of 40.125 N/mm2. The greatest impact resistance was also obtained from the use of epoxy resin with the highest absorbed energy value of 2,280 joules with an average of 1,713 joules, the use of polyester resins obtained the highest absorbed energy value of 1,547 joules with an average of 1,337 joules. From the macro photo observation of the test results, the lack of bonding between the fiber and the matrix affects the tensile and impact strength values.

Additional Information: Perkembangan material komposit dalam bidang teknik material sangat pesat, hal ini yang mendorong pemanfaatan sumber daya alam (anyam rami) untuk merekayasa material komposit yang lebih baik. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui kekuatan tarik dan impak komposit bermatrik anyam rami dengan variasi pengisi polimer antara resin poliester dan resin epoksi, serta komparasi antara penggunaan kedua resin tersebut pada kekuatan tarik dan impak komposit bermatrik anyam rami. Komposit menggunakan fraksi volume serat 30% sebagai matrik dan 70% fraksi volume untuk tiap resin sebagai pengisi. Pembuatan spesimen menggunakan standarisasi ASTM D638 untuk pengujian tarik dan ASTM E23 untuk pengujian impak. Hasil pengujian menunjukan kekuatan tarik terbesar didapat pada penggunaan resin epoksi yakni sebesar 65,7 N/mm2 dan rata-rata kekuatan tarik mencapai 52,475 N/mm2, sedangkan penggunaan resin poliester mendapat nilai terbesar 54,3 N/mm2 dan rata-rata sebesar 40,125 N/mm2. Untuk ketahanan impak terbesar juga didapat pada penggunaan resin epoksi dengan nilai energi yang diserap tertinggi sebesar 2,280 joule dengan rata-rata 1,713 joule, penggunaan resin poliester mendapat nilai energi yang diserap tertinggi sebesar 1,547 joule dengan rata-rata 1,337 joule. Dari pengamatan secara foto makro patahan hasil uji, kurangnya ikatan antara serat dengan pengisi mempengaruhi nilai kekuatan tarik dan impak.
