Abstract

The problem of inequality is at point 10 of SDG's - reducing inequality within and between countries. During 2015-2020, the European Union region had lower income inequality than other regions. This study aims to identify the effects of economic complexity, trade openness, unemployment and research and development spending on income inequality from 2015-2020 in 20 European Union countries. This study uses the FEM (Fixed Effect Model) panel data method. From the results of this study it can be seen that partially, economic complexity and research spending have a significant negative effect on income inequality, unemployment has a significant positive effect on income inequality, while trade openness has no significant effect on income inequality. Simultaneously, economic complexity, trade openness, unemployment and research and development spending have a significant effect on income inequality in 20 European Union countries in 2015-2020. The further implication of this research is how European Union countries can improve the quality of human and technological resources which can increase the economic complexity index supported by research and development expenditures from both the private and government sectors and accompanied by policies that encourage employment.
