Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the types and reasons of third grade students and teachers code-switching and code-mixing in an international school called "EvFia Land School". The author uses descriptive qualitative method because the data taken by the author is in the form of writings and words. In collecting data, the researcher used observation and interview techniques. The writer discovered 114 utterances classified as code-switching or code-mixing. According to the findings of this research, 84 of the 114 utterances are code-switching cases, whereas 30 are code-mixing cases. The third-grade students and the teacher often code-switched with Intra-sentential switching type and code-mixed with Insertion type. The researcher can conclude that the reason why the third-grade students and the teacher code-switched and code-mixed was basically to talk about certain topics related to the subjects in the class. It can be concluded that although EvFia Land school is categorized as an international school with language regulations that must use English, it does not rule out the possibility that students or teachers will still often do code-switching and code-mixing and not as often as teachers.

Additional Information: Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui jenis dan alasan terjadinya alih kode dan campur kode siswa dan guru kelas III di sekolah internasional bernama “EvFia Land School”. Penulis menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif karena data yang diambil penulis berupa tulisan dan kata-kata. Dalam pengumpulan data, peneliti menggunakan teknik observasi dan wawancara. Penulis menemukan 114 ujaran yang termasuk dalam kategori alih kode atau campur kode. Berdasarkan temuan penelitian ini, 84 dari 114 ujaran tersebut merupakan kasus alih kode, sedangkan 30 merupakan kasus campur kode. Siswa kelas III dan guru sering melakukan alih kode dengan tipe alih Intra-sentential dan campur kode dengan tipe Insertion. Peneliti dapat menyimpulkan bahwa alasan siswa kelas III dan guru melakukan alih kode dan campur kode pada dasarnya adalah untuk membicarakan topik tertentu yang berkaitan dengan mata pelajaran di kelas. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa meskipun sekolah EvFia Land dikategorikan sebagai sekolah internasional dengan peraturan bahasa yang harus menggunakan bahasa Inggris, namun tidak menutup kemungkinan siswa atau guru masih sering melakukan alih kode dan campur kode.
