Abstract
Nickel is one of Indonesia's largest mining commodities. One of the nickel ore deposits in Indonesia comes from Halmahera, North Maluku, in the form of nickel limonite with an average nickel content of 1.50%. The processing of low grade nickel ore (≤ 1.50%) is generally through hydrometallurgical processes such as High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) which is the most efficient process for the extraction of low grade nickel. However, the HPAL process requires facilities capable of operating in acidic environments and high pressures, resulting in relatively large investment and operating costs. Several new processes were developed to overcome these problems, one of which is the sulfation roasting process. The sulfation roasting method in this study was carried out with the addition of sodium fluoride which was previously effective in increasing nickel and cobalt recovery in the activation pretreatment process. This research aims to study the effect of roasting temperature and time, as well as the addition of sodium fluoride on nickel and cobalt recovery in the sulfation roasting process of Halmahera Limonite Nickel Ore. In order to achieve this goal, Halmahera limonite nickel ore was sulfatized using 50 wt.% sulfuric acid with a variation of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 wt.% sodium fluoride addition. The mixture was then roasted with temperature variations of 500, 600, 700, and 750 ℃ and roasting time variations of 10, 20, and 30 minutes. The roasting results were leached using water, thus obtaining a sulfate solution. The sulfation roasting process can be done in a shorter time with the addition of sodium fluoride. This statement is evident in the ICP-OES analysis results which show that the percent recovery of nickel and cobalt of 71.26% and 97.33% can be obtained at a roasting time of only 30 minutes, a roasting temperature of 700 ℃, and the addition of 3 wt.% sodium fluoride.

Additional Information: | Nikel merupakan salah satu komoditas tambang terbesar Indonesia. Salah satu deposit bijih nikel di Indonesia berasal dari Halmahera, Maluku Utara, dalam bentuk nikel limonit dengan rata-rata kadar nikel 1,50%. Pengolahan bijih nikel kadar rendah (≤ 1,50%) umumnya melalui proses hidrometalurgi seperti High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) yang merupakan proses paling efisien untuk ekstraksi nikel kadar rendah. Namun Proses HPAL memerlukan fasilitas yang mampu beroperasi pada lingkungan asam dan tekanan tinggi, sehingga biaya investasi dan operasi relatif besar. Beberapa proses baru dikembangkan untuk mengatasi permasalahan tersebut, salah satunya yaitu proses Sulfatisasi-Pemangangan-Pelindian atau Sulfation Roasting. Metode Sulfatisasi-Pemanggangan-Pelindian pada penelitian ini dilakukan dengan penambahan natrium fluorida yang sebelumnya efektif meningkatkan recovery nikel dan kobalt pada proses activation pretreatment. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari pengaruh temperatur dan waktu pemanggangan, serta penambahan natrium fluorida terhadap recovery nikel dan kobalt pada proses Sulfatisasi-Pemanggangan-Pelindian nikel limonit Halmahera. Dalam upaya mencapai tujuan tersebut, bijih nikel limonit Halmahera disulfatisasi menggunakan asam sulfat sebanyak 50 wt.% dengan variasi penambahan natrium fluorida 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, dan 5 wt.%. Campuran kemudian dipanggang dengan variasi temperatur 500, 600, 700, dan 750 ℃ dan variasi waktu pemanggangan 10, 20, dan 30 menit. Hasil pemanggangan dilindi menggunakan air, sehingga diperoleh suatu larutan sulfat. Hasil analisis ICP-OES menunjukkan bahwa persen recovery nikel dan kobalt tertinggi sebesar 71,26% dan 97,33% yang diperoleh pada temperatur pemanggangan 700 ℃, waktu pemanggangan 30 menit, dan penambahan natrium fluorida 3 wt.%. | |||||||||
