Abstract

Coal is a mining product that can be applied to produce energy sources through combustion. One of the by-products of coal combustion is fly ash. Fly ash can be reused as an additive in cement, ceramics, bricks, concrete, and asphalt. Fly ash comprises various elements and compounds such as SiO2, Fe2O3, and rare earth elements (REE). Rare earth elements are metallic elements consisting of Sc, Y, and 15 lanthanide elements. Metal extraction with low concentrations can be carried out using the hydrometallurgical method because it requires low energy and produces high recoveries. One hydrometallurgical method for separating REE is solvent extraction. Pregnant leach solution (PLS) was prepared using acetic acid using the agitation leaching method. Solvent extraction research was conducted on a laboratory scale by mixing PLS with extractants to produce a solution in the organic and aqueous phases. Separation of the solution phase is carried out by the decantation method. The solution was characterized using ICP-MS. The experimental variables in this study were the type of extractant (D2EHPA, TBP, TOPO), the concentration of extractant (0.1, 0.4, 0.7, 1 M), and the ratio of organic phase solution (O) to aqueous phase solution (A) (O/A) (1/3, 1/2, 1/1, 2/1, 3/1). The experimental results are determined as the best results for each variation. The best results were obtained with a high percentage of extraction in various types of extractants. D2EHPA provides a percent extraction up to 90% of LREE. The selectivity value of D2EHPA for SLREE/MREE = 0.56, SMREE/HREE = 0.52, SHREE/LREE = 0.48. The best extractant concentration variations were 0.1 M with 90.20% of LREE, 60.27% of MREE, and 59.26% of HREE. The best O/A variation was 1/1 with 95.22% of LREE, 76.64% of MREE, and 67.78% of HREE. Based on the McCabe-Thiele method, Sc, Y, and Ce elements produce a high percent extraction in a one-step extraction process at a ratio of O/A was 1/1.

Additional Information: Batu bara merupakan hasil tambang yang dapat diaplikasikan untuk menghasilkan sumber energi melalui proses pembakaran. Salah satu hasil dari proses pembakaran yaitu abu terbang. Dampak abu terbang dapat dikurangi dengan mengolah atau menggunakan kembali abu terbang sebagai semen, keramik, batu bata, beton, dan aspal. Abu terbang tersusun atas berbagai unsur dan senyawa seperti SiO2, Fe2O3, dan logam tanah jarang. Logam tanah jarang merupakan unsur logam yang terdiri atas Sc, Y, dan 15 unsur lantanida. Metode ekstraksi logam dengan konsentrasi rendah dapat dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode hidrometalurgi karena membutuhkan energi yang sedikit dan menghasilkan recovery yang tinggi. Salah satu metode pemisahan logam tanah jarang yaitu solvent extraction. Larutan hasil pelindian atau pregnant leach solution (PLS) dibuat menggunakan asam asetat dengan metode agitation leaching. Penelitian ekstraksi pelarut dilakukan dalam skala laboratorium dengan cara mencampurkan PLS dengan ekstraktan sehingga menghasilkan larutan pada fasa organik dan fasa aqueous. Pemisahan fasa larutan dilakukan dengan melakukan dekantasi. Larutan kemudian dikarakterisasi menggunakan ICP-MS. Variabel percobaan pada penelitian yaitu jenis ekstraktan (D2EHPA, TBP, TOPO), konsentrasi ekstraktan (0,1; 0,4; 0,7; 1 M), dan rasio larutan fasa organik (O) terhadap fasa aqueous (A) (O/A) (1/3, 1/2, 1/1, 2/1, 3/1). Hasil percobaan ditentukan pada hasil terbaik tiap variasinya. Pada variasi jenis ekstraktan, hasil terbaik dengan persen ekstraksi tinggi yaitu D2EHPA hingga 90% LREE. Nilai selektivitas D2EHPA yaitu SLREE/MREE = 0,56; SMREE/HREE = 0,52; SHREE/LREE = 0,48. Pada variasi konsentrasi ekstraktan yaitu 0,1 M dengan LREE 90,20%, MREE 60,27%, dan HREE 59,26%. Pada variasi O/A terbaik yaitu 1/1 dengan persen ekstraksi LREE 95,22%, MREE 74,64%, dan HREE 67,78%. Berdasarkan Metode McCabe-Thiele, unsur Sc, Y, dan Ce menghasilkan persen ekstraksi tinggi dalam 1 tahapan pada rasio O/A: 1/1.
