Abstract

The use of rice straw waste as raw material to make particle board is one of the best solutions. Particle board is a panel board made of lignocellulosic base material in the form of small pieces that are attached using a synthetic adhesive suitable for the pressure and heat of the press. For high water repellency and require features such as self-cleaning, non-sticking, reduction of bio-fouling and antimicrobial effects or moisture barrier. Therefore hydrophobic surfaces can be implemented in various technological applications in various sectors. The purpose of this research is to make the particle board surface waterproof or hydrophobic to create taro leaf effect, avoid scratches and moisture resistance by way of coating. After the study was carried out, the data results were obtained from two tests that had been carried out, namely the contact angle test and the thickness test to determine the density of the particle board, the results obtained on the PJA 1 specimen had an average contact angle of 97.16o and had a density of 0.749, for the PJA 2 specimen had a value the average contact angle is 100.22o and has a density value of 0.662, then specimen PJB 1 has a contact angle value of 90.97o and has a density value of 0.624, then specimen PJB 2 has an average contact angle value of 94.82o and has a density value of 0.667. this is the more layers that are coated on the particleboard surface, the higher the level of hydrophobicity.
