Abstract

This study aims to investigate types of anxiety encountered by students in speaking English, to investigate the factors that cause students' speaking anxiety in English learning, and to understand students’ strategies for handling their speaking anxiety in English learning. This study is qualitative research with a case study method. This study was conducted at SMA Negeri 24 Kabupaten Tangerang. The sample of a class is class 10 IPS 1, then 3 out of 47 students were selected by purposive sampling to be interviewed. Data collection techniques include observation, questionnaire, and interview. According to the study's findings, when one student took the speaking test, other students teased and laughed at them; Students are often insecure, openly refuse to answer questions, and some students even throw assignments; The assessment of the speaking test shows that students did not prepare enough; During the speaking test assessment, students experience anxiety and occasionally read the text; they fear to answer incorrectly so their voice becomes lowered; During the question and answer period, students frequently avoid the topic or don't actively participate. So, it can be concluded that the type of anxiety faced by students speaking anxiety in English learning was trait anxiety and state anxiety; The factors that cause students’ speaking anxiety in English learning were self-perception or self-esteem, presentation in the classroom, fear of making mistake, social environment, gender, and formal classroom environment; Students’ strategies for handling their speaking anxiety in English learning were preparation, relaxation, positive thinking, peer seeking and resignation. This study enriches previous studies, especially by Rumiyati and Seftika (2018).

Additional Information: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki jenis-jenis kecemasan yang dihadapi siswa dalam berbicara bahasa Inggris, untuk menyelidiki faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan kecemasan berbicara siswa dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, dan untuk memahami strategi siswa dalam menangani kecemasan berbicara mereka dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus. Penelitian ini dilakukan di SMA Negeri 24 Kabupaten Tangerang. Sampel suatu kelas adalah kelas 10 IPS 1, kemudian 3 dari 47 siswa dipilih secara purposive sampling untuk diwawancarai. Teknik pengumpulan data meliputi observasi, angket, dan wawancara. Menurut temuan studi tersebut, ketika seorang siswa mengikuti tes berbicara, siswa lain mengejek dan menertawakan mereka; Siswa sering minder, terang-terangan menolak menjawab pertanyaan, bahkan ada siswa yang mengoper tugas; Penilaian tes berbicara menunjukkan bahwa siswa kurang mempersiapkan diri; Selama penilaian tes berbicara, siswa mengalami kecemasan dan sesekali membaca teks; mereka takut salah menjawab sehingga suaranya menjadi rendah; Selama periode tanya jawab, siswa sering menghindari topik atau tidak aktif berpartisipasi. Jadi, dapat disimpulkan bahwa jenis kecemasan yang dihadapi oleh kecemasan berbicara siswa dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris adalah trait anxiety dan state anxiety; Faktor-faktor penyebab kecemasan berbicara siswa dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris adalah persepsi diri atau harga diri, presentasi di kelas, takut membuat kesalahan, lingkungan sosial, jenis kelamin, dan lingkungan kelas formal; Strategi siswa untuk mengatasi kecemasan berbicara mereka dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris adalah persiapan, relaksasi, berpikir positif, pencarian teman sebaya dan pengunduran diri. Kajian ini memperkaya kajian-kajian sebelumnya, khususnya oleh Rumiyati dan Seftika (2018).
