Abstract
This research aims to figure out what Indonesian students’ culture shock toward the Malaysian Education System during their study at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). The researcher used qualitative methods and employed participant observation, and semi-structured interviews. The subject of this research was Indonesian students at Universiti Sains Malaysia. There are more than 20 Indonesian students’ who studied at USM, but only selected participants who being observed by the researcher. Based on observation and interviews, it appears that students are experiencing culture shock, especially in education. There are several differences between the education systems in Indonesia and Malaysia, which led to this situation. One of them is the tutorial class which is different from Indonesia. While experiencing cultural shock, students are able to successfully adapt to the new environment by hanging out with friends and asking their friends or local to help them deal with their problem, which makes student life easier. Thus, the researcher concludes that Indonesian students have experienced culture shock at Universiti Sains Malaysia, but they have managed to cope.

Additional Information: | Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui culture shock mahasiswa Indonesia terhadap Sistem Pendidikan Malaysia selama menempuh pendidikan di Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Peneliti menggunakan metode kualitatif dan menggunakan observasi partisipan, dan wawancara semi terstruktur. Subyek penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa Indonesia di Universiti Sains Malaysia. Ada lebih dari 20 mahasiswa Indonesia yang belajar di USM, namun hanya peserta terpilih yang diobservasi oleh peneliti. Berdasarkan observasi dan wawancara, terlihat bahwa siswa mengalami gegar budaya, khususnya di bidang pendidikan. Ada beberapa perbedaan sistem pendidikan di Indonesia dan Malaysia yang menyebabkan situasi ini. Salah satunya adalah kelas tutorial yang berbeda dengan Indonesia. Saat mengalami gegar budaya, siswa dapat berhasil beradaptasi dengan lingkungan baru dengan bergaul dengan teman dan meminta bantuan teman atau penduduk setempat untuk mengatasi masalah mereka, yang membuat hidup siswa lebih mudah. Dengan demikian, peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa mahasiswa Indonesia pernah mengalami gegar budaya di Universiti Sains Malaysia, namun mereka berhasil mengatasinya. | |||||||||
