Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the influence of text-to-speech software towards students’ speaking ability. The research methodology applied in this research was quantitative approach with quasi experimental design. This research was conducted in SMAN 2 Krakatau Steel Cilegon on the second semester of academic year 2014/2015. In this research, all students at tenth grade of SMAN 2 Krakatau Steel Cilegon were taken as population. The population was 396 students. This research involved two classes of the tenth grade of SMAN 2 Krakatau Steel Cilegon which was pointed based on purposive sampling technique. One class was chosen as an experimental group and another class as a control group. The sample was 80 students. The instrument used was oral speaking test which divided into two parts; pre-test and post-test. Moreover, the researcher used content and construct validity to know the validity of the tests and Cohen’s Kappa Coefficient to test the inter-rater reliability. After collecting the data, the researcher analyzed them by using t-test. In analyzing the data, the researcher used SPSS v.22. The researcher got the result from the significance test or tcount was 2.517 while ttable was 1.991. It showed that tcount was higher than ttable (2.517>1.991). Therefore, the null hypothesis is refused and the alternative hypothesis is received. It means that there was a positive influence between the group treated with TTS software and the group with conventional teaching. Based on the result of this research, it can be concluded that text-to-speech software can influence students’ speaking ability. Keywords: text-to-speech software, speaking ability.
