Abstract

The use of plastic products as a packaging material is increasing and the resulting impact can result in pollution to the environment. Prevention efforts continue to be carried out, namely by using plastics that come from nature and can be decomposed, known as bioplastics, one of which is Polylactid acid (PLA). Research that has been carried out includes the manufacture of PLA/Cellulose acetate Composite and Tween 80 as a compatibilizer using the casting method which is able to increase tensile strength and elongation at break, but in this study no antimicrobial agents were added. In previous studies it was reported that the addition of metal oxides as antimicrobials to PLA polymers could reduce the mechanical properties of the resulting bioplastics (Ghozali et al., 2020). The aim of this study was to obtain a concentration of ZnO which was able to improve the mechanical and antimicrobial properties of the PLA/CA/Tween 80 composite film synthesis. The test results showed an increasing trend in mechanical tests with the highest addition of 6% ZnO to the PLA/CA/Tween80 composite, test results SEM at 5000x and 10,000x magnification showed that the distribution of ZnO in the composite film was quite even. The crystallinity and amorphous values of the film composite with the addition of 10% ZnO respectively were 48.922% and 51.078% and there was a change in functional groups from the PLA/CA/Tween80 composite without ZnO to the composite film using ZnO which was marked by a change in the O-H group at wave 3353.5 cm⁻¹ from a carboxylic acid group to an ether group. Testing of antimicrobial agents to obtain inhibition zones for bacterial growth was carried out using the disc diffusion method which did not match the character of the PLA/CA/Tween80/ZnO film composite, it is recommended to replace it with the well method in future studies.

Additional Information: Penggunaan produk plastik sebagai bahan kemasan semakin meningkat dan dampak yang ditimbulkan dapat berakibat pencemaran terhadap lingkungan. Upaya pencegahan terus dilakukan yaitu dengan pemakaian plastik yang berasal dari alam dan dapat terurai yang dikenal dengan istilah bioplastik salah satunya adalah Polylactid acid (PLA). Penelitian yang sudah dilakukan antara lain pembuatan Komposit PLA/Selulosa asetat dan Tween 80 sebagai compatibilizer dengan menggunakan metode casting yang mampu meningkatkan tensile strength dan elongation at break, tetapi dalam penelitian tersebut belum di tambahkan agen antimikroba. Dalam penelitian terdahulu dilaporkan bahwa penambahan Logam Oksida sebagai antimikroba pada polimer PLA dapat menurunkan sifat mekanik bioplastik yang dihasilkan (Ghozali et al., 2020). Tujuan penelitian ini mendapatkan konsentrasi ZnO yang mampu meningkatkan sifat mekanik dan antimikroba dari sintesis komposit film PLA/CA/Tween 80. Hasil pengujian menunjukan adanya trend peningkatan pada uji mekanik dengan tertinggi pada penambahan 6% ZnO pada komposit PLA/CA/Tween80, hasil uji SEM pada perbesaran 5000x dan 10.000x menunjukan penyebaran ZnO pada komposit film cukup merata. Nilai kristalinitas dan amorf komposit film dengan penambahan ZnO 10% secara berurutan adalah 48,922% dan 51,078% dan terjadi perubahan gugus fungsi dari komposit PLA/CA/Tween80 tanpa ZnO dengan komposit film yang menggunakan ZnO ditandai adanya perubahan gugus O-H pada gelombang 3353.5 cm⁻¹ dari gugus asam karboksilat menjadi gugus eter. Pengujian antimikroba agen untuk mendapatkan zona hambat pertumbuhan bakteri dilakukan dengan metode difusi cakaram yang tidak sesuai dengan karakter komposit film PLA/CA/Tween80/ZnO, disarankan mengganti dengan menggunakan metode sumuran pada penelitian selanjutnya.
