Abstract

The aim of this research is to describe the role of the full English environment at Global Indonesia School in developing English speaking skills at primary level including the use of the teaching strategies, student’s perception, and also student’s challenge in learning speaking. This study employs the qualitative case study design involving eight students and two English teachers in the site. The data was collected through observations, interviews, and documentation. The result showed that full English environment has supported the development of students’ English-speaking ability. The use of teaching strategies, role play and small group discussion have also contributed in learning speaking. The study also showed that student has provided positive responses stating that the full English environment has a supportive role in learning English especially in speaking. They also feel enjoyed learning in the class and make them more confident to use English instead of Indonesian as a habit in daily learning activities. In this study, the researcher also identified some challenges that students encounter when learning English speaking skills, including a lack of vocabulary and a fear of making mistakes. From the results of this study, it is recommended that we can find out wider factors in the language acquisition besides using full English environment and also provide more insight on how environmental factors can support students' English learning.

Additional Information:	Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan peran lingkungan berbahasa Inggris penuh di Global Indonesia School dalam mengembangkan keterampilan berbicara Bahasa Inggris pada tingkat dasar, termasuk penggunaan strategi pengajaran, persepsi siswa, dan juga tantangan siswa dalam belajar berbicara. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain studi kasus kualitatif yang melibatkan delapan siswa dan dua guru Bahasa Inggris di lokasi tersebut. Data dikumpulkan melalui observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa lingkungan berbahasa Inggris penuh telah mendukung perkembangan kemampuan berbicara Bahasa Inggris siswa. Penggunaan strategi pengajaran, permainan peran, dan diskusi kelompok kecil juga telah berkontribusi dalam pembelajaran berbicara. Penelitian ini juga menunjukkan bahwa siswa memberikan tanggapan positif yang menyatakan bahwa lingkungan berbahasa Inggris penuh memiliki peran yang mendukung dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris terutama dalam berbicara. Mereka juga merasa senang belajar di kelas dan menjadi lebih percaya diri dalam menggunakan Bahasa Inggris sebagai kebiasaan dalam aktivitas pembelajaran sehari-hari. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti juga mengidentifikasi beberapa tantangan yang dihadapi siswa dalam belajar keterampilan berbicara Bahasa Inggris, termasuk kurangnya kosa kata dan rasa takut membuat kesalahan. Dari hasil penelitian ini, disarankan untuk mencari faktor-faktor yang lebih luas dalam pemerolehan bahasa selain dari penggunaan lingkungan berbahasa Inggris penuh dan juga memberikan wawasan lebih lanjut tentang bagaimana faktor-faktor lingkungan dapat mendukung pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris siswa.
