Abstract
This research discusses the symbolization of gender discrimination in the Korean drama Squid Game. Gender discrimination is a social problem faced by many countries, so it is often used as a story idea in films and dramas. Squid Game represents various social problems that are currently happening in South Korea. One of the real problems in South Korea is the issue of gender discrimination. This reserach aims to determine the symbolization of gender discrimination in the Korean drama Squid Game seen from the level of reality, representation, and ideology. This research is a type of qualitative research with a critical paradigm. The research uses John Fiske's semiotic analysis in the form of a three-stage analysis, namely the level of reality, the level of representation, and the level of ideology. The unit of analysis consists of nine scenes in the Squid Game drama that represent gender discrimination. The results of this research indicate that at the reality level, gender discrimination in Drama Squid Game is symbolized by movement and expression. Meanwhile, at the level of representation, gender discrimination in Drama Squid Game is shown by sound in the form of dialogue. At the ideological level, gender discrimination in the Squid Game Drama is shown in a patriarchal form. The conclusion of this research is that in the drama Squid Game, the symbolization of gender discrimination can be seen in the combination of expressions, words, camera-taking techniques, dialogue, and patriarchy. Verbal violence, a striking imbalance between men and women where men always have the advantage, further emphasizes gender discrimination in the Squid Game film.

| Additional Information: | Penelitian ini membahas simbolisasi diskriminasi gender pada drama Korea Squid Game. Diskriminasi gender merupakan permasalahan sosial yang dihadapi banyak negara sehingga sering dijadikan ide cerita dalam film maupun drama. Squid Game merepresentasikan berbagai masalah sosial yang sedang terjadi di Korea Selatan. Salah satu masalah nyata di Korea Selatan ialah isu diskriminasi gender. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui simbolisasi diskriminasi gender dalam drama Korea Squid Game dilihat dari level realitas, representasi, dan ideologi. Penelitian ini merupakan tipe penelitian kualitatif dengan paradigma kritis. Penelitian menggunakan analisis semiotika John Fiske berupa analisis tiga tahap yaitu level realitas, level representasi, dan level ideologi. Unit analisis terdiri dari sembilan scene yang ada di drama Squid Game yang merepresentasikan diskriminasi gender. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pada level realitas, diskriminasi gender dalam Drama Squid Game disimbolkan dengan gerakan dan ekspresi. Sedangkan dalam level representasi, diskriminasi gender dalam Drama Squid Game ditunjukkan dengan suara berupa dialog. Dalam level ideologi, diskriminasi gender dalam Drama Squid Game ditunjukkan dalam bentuk patriarki. Kesimpulan dalam penelitian ini yaitu, dalam drama Squid Game, simbolisasi diskriminasi gender terlihat dalam kombinasi ekspresi, kata-kata, teknik pengambilan kamera, dialog, dan patriarki. Kekerasan verbal, ketidakseimbangan yang mencolok antara laki-laki dan perempuan dimana laki-laki selalu diuntungkan, semakin mempertegas diskriminasi gender pada film Squid Game. | |||||||||
