Abstract

Coconut shell and coffee grounds waste are organic materials that have potential to be active charcoal adsorbents cause contain carbon and therefore can reduce pollutant in domestic wastewater. The study aims to obtain the effectiveness of activated charcoal from coconut shells and coffee grounds in degrading the levels of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), and Total Suspended Solid (TSS) in domestic wastewater. The method used in this research is adsorption with a stirrer using 100 mesh of activated carbon adsorbent. The process of making activated charcoal consists of three stages, the carbonization process with a temperature of 450°C and 600°C, the activation process using chloride acid, and the quality test of activated charcoal according to technical quality requirements SNI 06-3730-1995. The adsorption process was carried out by adding a mass variation of coconut shell activated carbon 0.8 gr; 1.2 gr; 1.8 gr, activated carbon coffee grounds 1 gr; 1.5 gr; 2 gr, and a combination of both with a composition 1:1, 1:2, and 2:1 from the most optimal mass yield of activated carbon put into domestic wastewater samples with variations in contact time of 1, 2, and 3 hours. Based on the best research results, it was found that coffee grounds activated carbon could reduce 36.7% COD, 52% BOD, and 62.2% TSS. Coconut shell activated charcoal can reduce 62.6% COD, 49.4% BOD, and 67.07% TSS. Meanwhile, mixed activated carbon can reduce the level of pollutant COD 63.5%, BOD 68.5%, and TSS 74.4%.

Additional Information: Limbah tempurung kelapa dan ampas kopi merupakan material organik yang mengandung karbon sehingga berpotensi sebagai adsorben arang aktif karena dapat mengurangi kadar pencemar dalam limbah cair domestik. Adapun tujuan penelitian ini yaitu untuk mendapatkan efektivitas arang aktif dari tempurung kelapa dan ampas kopi dalam mendegradasi kadar Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biologycal Oxigen Demand (BOD), dan Total Suspended Solid (TSS) dalam limbah cair domestik sehingga dapat sesuai dengan baku mutu. Metode yang digunakan pada penelitian adalah adsorpsi menggunakan adsorben karbon aktif berukuran 100 mesh dengan bantuan pengadukan. Proses pembuatan arang aktif terdiri dari tiga tahap yaitu proses karbonisasi pada furnace dengan suhu 450°C dan 600°C, proses aktivasi menggunakan HCL, dan proses pengujian kualitas arang aktif agar memenuhi SNI syarat mutu arang aktif teknis 06-3730-1995. Proses adsorpsi dilakukan dengan memasukkan variasi massa karbon aktif tempurung kelapa 0,8 gr; 1,2 gr; 1,8 gr, karbon aktif ampas kopi 1 gr; 1,5 gr; 2 gr, dan campuran keduanya dengan komposisi 1:1, 1:2, dan 2:1 dari hasil massa karbon aktif paling optimal kedalam sampel limbah cair domestik dengan variasi waktu kontak 1, 2, dan 3 jam. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian terbaik diperoleh bahwa karbon aktif ampas kopi dapat mereduksi 36,7% COD, 52% BOD, dan TSS 62,2%. Arang aktif tempurung kelapa dapat mereduksi 62,6% COD, 49,4% BOD, dan 67,07% TSS. Sedangkan karbon aktif campuran dapat mereduksi kadar pencemar COD 63,5%, BOD 68,5% dan TSS 74,4%.
