Abstract
Introduction Anemia is a condition when the concentration of hemoglobin or the number of red blood cells is lower than the normal range.1,2 The 2018 Riskesdas explained that 48.9% of pregnant women in Indonesia experience anemia. Anemia not only has an impact on the mother, but also on the baby being born.3 Based on data from the Banten Provincial Health Office, asphyxia ranks second highest as a cause of neonatal death.4 In this regard, the guidelines for the neonatal resuscitation program state that the Apgar score can provide information about the status overall newborns and response to resuscitation.5 This became the basis for researchers to conduct a study to find out more about the relationship between anemia in pregnant women and the Apgar score at Banten Hospital. Method The method used in this research is analytic observational with cross sectional design. The population in this study were pregnant women who gave birth at Banten Hospital in 2020 - 2022. The research data is secondary data taken from medical records taken by consecutive sampling with selection criteria. Results The prevalence of anemia in pregnant women at Banten Hospital in the study subjects was 43.1% and 42.6% of pregnant women had pregnancy complications. Newborns with low Apgar scores in the fifth minute were 6.9% and 8.6% of the total babies with low Apgar were born to anemic mothers. There was no significant relationship between the anemia condition of the mother during pregnancy and a low Apgar score (p value 0.405). However, the results of statistical tests showed that there was a significant relationship between mothers with pregnancy complications and a low Apgar score (p value 0.013). Conclusion There was no significant relationship between maternal anemia at the end of pregnancy and the incidence of low Apgar scores in newborn at Banten Hospital.
