Abstract
This study discusses the audience acceptance of environmental news based on data-driven journalism. Audience reception in consuming environmental news with data journalism format is a study because the audience has the power to create meaning and act freely according to the meaning it creates about the media narrative. This study aims to determine the acceptance of environmental activists regarding data-based environmental news. This study uses qualitative methods with data analysis Carolyn Michelle reception analysis theory and data collection through in-depth interviews and observations of 5 environmental activists. The results showed audiences interpret denotative news in Tirto.id as news that does not discuss the shortcomings of the government in addressing environmental problems, and news in Tirto.id not presenting news impartially. Second, the existence of news framing in which audiences interpret environmental news based on data driven journalism, as: news escapes including policy makers who are blind in seeing the climate crisis in their countries, News builds reader awareness that all play a role in aggravating the climate crisis, and news does not emphasize injustice on environmental issues between developed and developing countries. Third, the majority of the audience is in the contesting reading group. Audiences in this group are aware of the message content of the news text they read, but on the other hand they analyze first based on the facts they know. The study also shows that there are many factors behind audience acceptance and good reading literacy habits influence their acceptance of a news story.
