Abstract

Gear is one component of the most widely used machines in the field of industrial and automotive fields. In a machining process, the gears have a very important function is to forward speed, power or torque from one component to the other components of the engine and call a mechanical drive. During this time a lot of development so obtained good gear, it is because a lot of gear that is damaged, worn, and broken because the gear is not strong against friction and pressure on the gears. In addition, damage to the gears due to pressure and friction makes the gears did not last long. To increase the hardness of the gear, then in need of material which can be strong at the moment experiencing round the optimum gear. The material is widely used for applications gears are medium carbon steel metal material. Metals medium carbon steel material is a metal material having a carbon content ranging from 0.30 to 0.59%. Medium carbon steel has a hardness 174.501 HVN beginning with non-treatment. carburizing quench and tempering process is done to increase the hardness and toughness of the material. Violence can gear in 140 HVN. In the results of the research, the hardness value of each temperature of 780 oC research, 810oC and 840oC that the hardness value in each can. The optimum hardness values can on HVN 165 355 at a temperature of 840 oC. Carbon steel was expected to be an alternative to the demand for steel material compliance with certain mechanical properties. In this experiment conducted heating the austenite region and then detained with a time of 20, 40 and 60 minutes. Furthermore, in lakuakn quench tempered later in carburizing with the aim to obtain a ferrite phase and coarse perlite and an increase in the hardness after tempering quech. This research is expected after quech process of tempering and carburizing steel can be produced with better properties than previous studies looking at the relationship mekanik.
