Abstract

Ogi Nurady Yana: AMUK LOSARI AFFAIR: SOCIAL CONFLICT IN BREBES REGENCY 1998; Undergraduate Thesis, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Science, University of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa, March 2023 This research aimed to find out the background of Losari riot in 1998 and the impact caused because of it. To reval the research purpose then historical research method was employed sourced from primary data and secondary data. The primary data sources came from archives, newspaper, and interview. While the secondary data were obtained from literatures either book, relevant research, or interview. The historical method consisted of heuristic, criticism, interpretation, and ended with histography stage. Based on the research conducted, Brebes is the westernmost area in Central Java Province. Brebes area is included into the second largest region in Central Java. Its large is directly proportional with its total population. Total population in Brebes Regency in 1998 was 1.577.631 people spread into 17 sub districts. That amount of population was not balanced by its community’s prosperity. The number of poor communities in Brebes Regency was 583.556 people. One of impacts from the high number of poor population was the increase of social disparity in the community. It could impact on emerging the seed of conflict. One of conflicts departing from this social disparity occurred in February 1998. The conflict started from economic crisis that hit Indonesia since the last of 1997. That time the people gathered around Losari Market to sue the price reduction of basic needs. However, the demonstration ended by the riot and looting. Chinese descents citizen that time became the victims of the riot because they were considered taking advantage in the middle of crisis situation. The riot occurred for two days, namely 12 until 13 of February 1998 and had large impact towards the community. It could be seen from the long traffic jam in Pantura route which caused operational bus stopped which headed to Jakarta and forth. For the chinese descents citizen, this riot caused an extremely deep trauma. Most of them chose to secure hemselves out of town. Even because of this riot one of the citizens chose to move overseas. Untuk mengungkap tujuan penelitian tersebut maka digunakan metode penelitian historis dan bersumber dari data primer dan sekunder. Sumber primer berasal dari arsip, surat kabar, dan wawancara. Sedangkan sumber sekunder diperoleh dari literatur baik berupa buku, penelitian yang relevan, maupun dengan wawancara. Metode historis tersebut terdiri dari heuristik, kritik, interpretasi, dan berakhir pada tahap historiografi. Berdasarkan penelitian yang dilakukan, Brebes merupakan daerah paling Barat dari Provinsi Jawa Tengah. Wilayah Brebes masuk ke daerah terluas kedua di Jawa Tengah. Luasnya wilayah tersebut berbanding lurus dengan banyaknya jumlah penduduk. Jumlah penduduk Kabupaten Brebes pada tahun 1998 sebanyak 1.577.631 jiwa yang tersebar kedalam 17 kecamatan. Banyaknya jumlah penduduk tersebut tidak diimbangi dengan kesejahteraan masyarakatnya. Jumlah masyarakat miskin di Kabupaten Brebes berjumlah 583.556 jiwa. Salah satu dampak dari banyaknya jumlah penduduk miskin adalah meningkatnya kesenjangan sosial di tengah masyarakat. Kesenjangan sosial tersebut bisa berdampak memunculkan benih konflik. Salah satu konflik akibat yang berawal dari kesenjangan sosial tersebut terjadi pada bulan Februari 1998. Konflik tersebut berawal dari krisis ekonomi yang melanda Indonesia sejak akhir tahun 1997. Pada saat itu masyarakat berkumpul di jalan sekitar Pasar Losari untuk menuntut penurunan harga kebutuhan pokok. Namun, aksi unjuk rasa tersebut berakhir pada aksi kerusuhan dan penjarahan. Warga keturunan Tionghoa pada saat itu menjadi korban kerusuhan karena dianggap mengambil keuntungan ditengah situasi krisis. Kerusuhan yang berlangsung selama dua hari, yaitu 12 – 13 Februari 1998 berdampak luas bagi masyarakat. Dampak tersebut terlihat dari kemacetan Panjang di jalur Pantura yang mengakibatkan berhentinya operasional bus yang mengarah ke Jakarta atau sebaliknya. Bagi warga keturunan Tionghoa kerusuhan ini mengakibatkan trauma mendalam. Sebagian besar memilih untuk mengamankan diri ke luar kota. Bahkan akibat dari kerusuhan ini salah satu warga memilih untuk pindah ke luar negeri. Kata Kunci: Konflik Sosial, Krisis Ekonomi, Warga Keturunan Tionghoa
