Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know the the effect of a modified problem-based learning model with regard to cognitive load theory on students' problem solving abilities. This research was conducted in SMP Negeri 7 Kota Serang in the academic year 2019/2020 with the sample used was class of VIII H as a control class that gained learning with the usual PBL models and class of VIII I as an experimental class using problem based learning models modified by cognitive load theory. the method used in this study is a mixed method of concurrent embedded models with quantitative methods as primary methods and qualitative methods as secondary methods. The results of the study show that the achievement and improvement of the problem solving abilities of the experimental class students is better than the control class students. In addition, the problem based learning model modified by cognitive load theory is also known to have a positive influence because it is able to minimize students' cognitive load during the learning process.

Additional Information: Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh model problem based learning yang dimodifikasi dengan memperhatikan cognitive load theory terhadap kemampuan pemecahan masalah siswa. Penelitian ini dilakukan di SMP Negeri 7 Kota Serang pada tahun ajaran 2021/2022 dengan sampel kelas VIII H sebagai kelas kontrol yang menerima pembelajaran dengan model problem based learning biasa dan kelas VIII I sebagai kelas eksperimen yang menerima pembelajaran dengan model problem based learning termodifikasi cognitive load theory. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu metode campuran model concurrent embedded dengan metode kuantitatif sebagai metode primer dan metode kualitatif sebagai metode sekunder. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pencapaian dan peningkatan kemampuan pemecahan masalah siswa kelas eksperimen lebih baik dari siswa kelas kontrol. Selain itu, model problem based learning termodifikasi cognitive load theory juga diketahui memberikan pengaruh positif karena mampu meminimalisir beban kognitif siswa pada saat proses pembelajaran berlangsung.
