Abstract
This study aims to determine the level of students mathematical understanding based on the Pirie-Kieren theory on the topic of algebra. The ability to understand mathematics has an important position in learning mathematics because it can make it easier for students to solve mathematical problems. The indicators of mathematical understanding include 7 observable aspects. Furthermore, these indicators are connected with the Pirie-Kieren theory which consists of several layers of understanding which include Primitive Knowing; Image Making; Image Having; Property Noticing; Formalising; Observing; Structuring; and Inventising. This type of research is descriptive qualitative with an initial sample of 32 students of class VIII at Public JHS 3 Tangerang City who were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data was collected through tests and structured interviews. Based on data analysis, it shows that low-ability students have low understanding and concentration on systematic problem solving, the subject makes many mistakes in using number operations and cannot write down the information obtained correctly and only achieves 3 layers of understanding. Students with moderate abilities have a fairly good understanding and concentration regarding the systematics of solving problems, the subject is able to apply number operations well. However, the subject cannot determine the value of each variable asked and achieves the 6 layers of understanding. Meanwhile, high-ability students have very good understanding and concentration related to systematic problem solving, subjects are able to apply number operations very well and are able to determine the value of each variable asked and achieves all layers of understanding.

Additional Information: | Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tingkat pemahaman matematis peserta didik berdasarkan teori Pirie-Kieren pada topik aljabar. Kemampuan pemahaman matematis memiliki kedudukan penting pada pembelajaran matematika karena dapat memudahkan peserta didik untuk menyelesaikan permasalahan matematika. Indikator pemahaman matematis meliputi 7 aspek yang dapat diamati. Selanjutnya, indikator tersebut dihubungkan dengan teori Pirie-Kieren yang terdiri dari beberapa lapisan pemahaman yakni meliputi Primitive Knowing; Image Making; Image Having; Property Noticing; Formalising; Observing; Structuring; dan Inventising. Jenis penelitian ini adalah kualitatif deskriptif dengan jumlah sampel awal sebanyak 32 peserta didik kelas VIII di SMPN 3 Kota Tangerang yang dipilih menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Data dikumpulkan melalui tes dan wawancara terstruktur. Berdasarkan analisis data menunjukkan bahwa peserta didik berkemampuan rendah memiliki pemahaman dan konsentrasi yang rendah terhadap sistematika penyelesaian masalah, subjek melakukan banyak kesalahan dalam penggunaan operasi bilangan dan tidak dapat menuliskan informasi yang diperoleh dengan benar dan hanya mencapai 3 lapisan pemahaman. Peserta didik berkemampuan sedang memiliki pemahaman dan konsentrasi yang cukup baik terkait sistematika penyelesaian masalah, subjek mampu menerapkan operasi bilangan dengan baik. Namun, subjek tidak dapat menentukan harga dari setiap variabel yang ditanyakan dan mencapai 6 lapisan pemahaman. Sedangkan, peserta didik berkemampuan tinggi memiliki pemahaman dan konsentrasi yang sangat baik terkait sistematika penyelesaian masalah, subjek mampu menerapkan operasi bilangan dengan sangat baik dan mampu untuk menentukan harga dari setiap variabel yang ditanyakan dan mencapai seluruh lapisan pemahaman. | |||||||||
