Abstract

Oil palm empty fruit bunches (EFB) is an agricultural waste containg high cellulose, so it has the potential to be converted into a wide variety of products. One of the chemical compounds that can be produced from EFB is lactic acid. Lactic acid is raw material in the manufacture of biodegradable polymers in the form of polylactic acid (PLA). This study aims to get the concentration of Lactobacillus acidophilus that can produce lactic acid with high concentration. Stages of research include pretreatment, hydrolysis and fermentation. EFB using NaOH pretreatment, hydrolysed for 48 hours using 5% (w/w) Trichoderma reesei and fermented by various concentration of Lactobacillus acidophilus (0.5; 1; 3; 5%). Glucose was analyzed by spectrophotometry method and Lactic acid was analyzed by High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The concentration of reducing sugar resulting from the hydrolysis of 16.6-17.9 g/L and the highest lactic acid concentration of 0.568 g/L obtained with the addition of Lactobacillus acidophilus 3%.
