Abstract

Poly-lactic acid (PLA) is a biocompatible, biodegradable, non-toxic and non-carcinogenic polymer for the human body and comes from renewable resources, so it is very good for medical applications and food packaging. In its use, PLA still has problems because of its brittle nature, easily brittle with elongation at break of less than 10% and hydrophobic, thus limiting the processing conditions of the polymer. Cassava starch is a biopolymer which has abundant availability with hydrophilic properties so it is easily degraded. Modification of PLA and cassava starch with glycerol plastisizer by blending is an attempt to improve the mechanical properties of tensile strength and elongation at break. The purpose of this study was to obtain PLA/starch blend film with good mechanical properties. This research was carried out in several stages, they were synthesis of PLA from lactic acid, synthesis of starch had plasticized with glycerol and synthesis of PLA/starch blend films. Synthesis of PLA from lactic acid is carried out using polycondensation method. Synthesis of starch that plasticized with glycerol was conducted by mixing (3% w/v) cassava starch with glycerol (1% v/v) at a temperature of 65oC. PLA produced at the polycondensation stage was mixed with starch had plasticized with glycerol at a temperature of 120oC with a variation of PLA/starch ratio of 0/100; 20/80; 40/60 and 50/50. The mixture was printed in a thin sheet (blend film) and dried at 70°C for 6 hours. The mechanical properties of the blend film are known by analyzing tensile strength and elongation at break. The results obtained show that the addition of PLA increases the tensile strength and elongation at break of blend film. The ratio PLA/starch that produced the higher mechanical properties was 40/60 with the tensile strength, elongation at break and swelling were 2.32 MPa, 21.25% and 46.44%, respectively.
