Abstract

Cassava starch is a hydrophilic polymer so that when it is composited with PLA, which is hydrophobic, the starch dispersion in the PLA matrix is imperfect. This imperfect occurs because of the inhomogeneity between the hydrophobic properties of PLA and the hydrophilic properties of starch. To resolve this, the making of PLA/starch blend films using the casting method requires a glacial acetic acid compatibilizer so that the resulting film is homogeneous. The resulting blend film was then analyzed for tensile strength, elongation at break, and melting point. Based on the results of this study, the characteristics of the best blend film were obtained in the addition of 3 ml of glacial acetic acid with a tensile strength value of 16.6 MPa, elongation at break 13%, and 103.1oC melting point.
