Abstract
Oxalic acid is an organic compound that can be found in many plants. The demand for oxalic acid in Indonesia is increasing every year because of its various uses, especially in the industrial sector. Taro beneng has the potential as a raw material for the manufacture of oxalic acid. The process of making oxalic acid using the alkaline melting method. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of NaOH solvent concentration and heating time on the physical and chemical characteristics of the oxalic acid produced. To determine the characteristics of the oxalic acid produced, yield calculations were carried out, analysis of oxalic acid content tests by permanganometric and HPLC, whiteness test, morphology test using SEM method, and functional group test by FTIR. The results showed that the yield produced in oxalic acid extraction obtained the maximum value when the concentration of NaOH was 1 M with a heating time of 60 minutes and the highest degree of whiteness was 0,75 M NaOH concentration and 60 minutes. Testing for oxalic acid levels by permanganometric or HPLC at a concentration of 1,5 M NaOH and a heating time of 180 minutes resulted in low levels of oxalic acid. The results of the FTIR method oxalic acid characteristic test showed O-H absorption at wave 3404.48 cm-1, C=O at wave 1687.07 cm-1, C-O at wave 1123.00 cm-1, and C-H at wave 667.70 cm-1.

Additional Information: | Asam oksalat merupakan senyawa organik yang banyak terdapat pada tanaman. Permintaan asam oksalat di Indonesia semakin meningkat setiap tahunnya karena kegunaannya yang beragam, terutama dalam bidang industri. Talas beneng berpotensi sebagai bahan baku pembuatan asam oksalat. Proses pembuatan asam oksalat menggunakan metode peleburan basa. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh konsentrasi larutan NaOH dan waktu pemanasan terhadap sifat fisik dan kimia asam oksalat yang dihasilkan. Untuk mengetahui karakteristik asam oksalat yang dihasilkan dilakukan perhitungan rendemen, analisis kadar asam oksalat dengan permanganometri dan HPLC, uji derajat putih, uji morfologi dengan metode SEM, dan uji gugus fungsi dengan FTIR. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa rendemen yang dihasilkan pada ekstraksi asam oksalat diperoleh nilai maksimum pada konsentrasi NaOH 1 M dengan waktu pemanasan 60 menit dan derajat putih tertinggi pada konsentrasi NaOH 0,75 M dan waktu 60 menit. Pengujian kadar asam oksalat secara permanganometri atau HPLC pada konsentrasi NaOH 1,5 M dan waktu pemanasan 180 menit menghasilkan kadar asam oksalat yang rendah.
