Abstract

ABSTARCT An Error Analysis of Students’ Silent Consonant Pronunciation at the Eight Grade of Junior High School in Pondok Pesantren Al – Kautsar By: Khurotul Ulya Arifa 2223101965 English Department This final project is a study about an error analysis of students’ silent consonant pronunciation made by the eighth grade students of junior high school at Pondok Pesantren Al-Kautsar. Most of the students may have problems to pronounce English silent consonant, although they got an English subject in their school and they can not master the English pronunciation well. Therefore, the students often make error. The objectives of this research was (1) to find out the errors mostly found in pronunciation of silent consonant made by students on eight grade at Pondok Pesantren Al-Kautsar (2) to identify the causes of errors which the students made. This research was used qualitative descriptive method. The source of data is taken by using purposive sampling from twenty students at eighth grade of junior high school at Pondok Pesantren Al-kautsar. The data were collected through pronunciation test (supporting instrument), interview and observation. Based on the research finding, the data showed that the subjects did mostly error in pronouncing silent sound of /w/ was 100%, silent sound of /t/ was 95%, and silent sound of /s/ was 90%, silent sound of /w/. From the result above found the causes of subjects’ error pronunciation are: (1) The different sounds between English and Indonesia, (2) They do not get enough practice on pronunciation, and (3) They are not familiar with English sound from they were young because most of them do not have family member who can speak English.
