Abstract
The objective of this research was to find out the types of code switching and code mixing used by teacher in the seventh grade of SMP N 8 Kota Serang, along with the reason for the teacher in using code switching and code mixing when teaching English in the classroom. A qualitative research method and content analysis research design were used by the researcher in conducting the research. The data source of this research was 192 utterances that contained code switching and code mixing. The research procedures were first, selecting the research problem. Second, the researcher collected the data source through observation. Third, the researcher designed the observation sheet and filled the sheet based on the observation. Fourth, the researcher analyzed the types of code switching and code mixing in teacher utterances according to Poplack and Muysken’s theory. Fifth, the researcher defined the percentage of the code switching and code mixing types, along with the reasons for using code switching and code mixing. Sixth, the researcher interviewed the teacher. Lastly, the researcher reported the conclusion. The result showed that there are 33 Inter-sentential utterances (31,1%), 64 Intra-sentential utterances (60,4%), and 9 utterances tag switching types (8,5%). Along with that, the result showed that there are 74 Insertion utterances (86%), 11 Alternation utterances (12,8%), and 1 Congruent Lexicalization utterance (1,2%). The result of reasons for using code switching and code mixing according to the interview are (1) talking about a certain topic, (2) interjection, and (3) repetition for clarification. Keywords: Code Switching, Code Mixing, Bilingual
