Abstract

AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ANXIETY IN EFL CLASSROOM AT THE FOURTH SEMESTER ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF FKIP UNTIRTA Suci Ramadhaniawati 2223112133 iii ABSTRACT The title of this research is an Analysis of Students’ Speaking Anxiety in EFL Classroom at the Fourth Semester English Department of FKIP UNTIRTA. The researcher observed 35 students at the fourth semester class A English Department of FKIP UNTIRTA. The research used descriptive qualitative research that investigated strategy in reducing speaking anxiety, factors of students’ speaking anxiety, and the levels of students' speaking anxiety. The researcher used qualitative technique to collect the data. The instruments that used in this research were semi-structured-interview and close ended questionnaire. The research findings were: there were four strategies that the students used to reduce speaking anxiety, such as preparation, relaxation, positive thinking and peer seeking. There were 46% of all the students choose preparation as their strategy in reducing speaking anxiety. There were six factors that contributed to students’ speaking anxiety; personal and interpersonal anxieties, instructor beliefs about language teaching, perceived level of English proficiency, instructor-learner action, classroom procedures, learners beliefs about language learning. There were 71% of all the students choose personal and interpersonal anxieties as their factors of speaking anxiety. From the questionnaire, it was found that there were three levels of anxiety; low anxiety level, moderate anxiety level and high anxiety level. There were 41% of all the students were in moderate anxiety level. Therefore, the further research on speaking anxiety and its solutions are really needed to help the students in EFL classroom learn speaking English better.
