Abstract

AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ CRITICAL THINKING ON THEIR ARGUMENTATIVE WRITING (A Study at Eleventh Grade Social-1 Students of SMAN 1Malingping) By Siti Latifah (102328) ABSTRACT This research aims to investigate students’ critical thinking as reflected in their argumentative writing of eleventh grade social-1 students at SMAN1 Malingping. This research used qualitative method by implementing content analysis research design which employed two data collection techniques, i.e the documentation of students’ argumentative writing and questionnaire. The data were, then analyzed based on the theory of Critical Thinking scoring rubric from facione&facione(2010) which were credible by triangulation. The result then categorized based on five stages of critical thinkers development by Elder and Paul (2010). The research revealed two finding related to the research questions. First, result of the students’ writing analysis showed that the students at eleventh grade social-1 of SMAN 1 Malingping dominated by challenge thinker (53.12%, or 17 students). Students’ text still showed that the verbalization of the students’ critical thinking was less sophisticated and explicit. Second as the questionnaire data revealed, that 62.5 % of students get difficulties in giving evidence. Students’ inability occurred due to their limited knowledge of the topic and lack of knowledge in applying their critical thinking in argumentative writing. The findings above suggest that the students need more guidance and communicative teaching-learning process in the class so that they have a better command of some critical thinking components to develop their critical thinking. Key words: Critical thinking, argumentative writing.
