Abstract

BSTRACT The objectives of this research were to know the error on using past tense in writing recount text and to find the causes of the error that made by the eight grade students of SMPN 9 Kota Serang. The research method that was used in this study is qualitative research method. The population of this study was the eight grade students of SMPN 9 Kota Serang which consists of 40 students of 8F who were chosen by using random sampling. In this research, the instruments used were: writing test, questionnaire and interview. The result of the analysis shows that: (1) the errors in recount writing made by the eight grade students of SMPN 9 Kota Serang are 247 occurrences in first test and 160 occurrences in second test. In term of each type errors, the errors of misformation 92 times in first test and 79 times in second test, errors of addition 50 times in first test and 20 times in second test, errors of omission 91 times in first test and 55 times in second test, and errors of misorder 14 times in first test and 6 times in second test. The test had proved as error by doing interview that about 80% of students still cannot use verb past tense. (2) the writer attempts to find out the causes of errors. The causes of errors are 85% of students were influenced by interlingual and 67,5% of students were influenced by intralingual interference that caused by over-generalization. (3) recount text less comprehension (82,5%) the students‟ problems in recount writing are structure problem (52,5%), vocabulary problem (75 %), composing sentences (65%),. Besides those problems, psychological factors also influence the students, such as motivation and interest. Finally, it is hoped that the teacher would make use of those findings in their teaching learning process in order to minimize the students‟ errors.
