Abstract

ABSTRACT An Analysis of Code Switching and Code Mixing in the English Subject at Eleventh Grade of SMAN 1 Anyer. Devi Komalasari 2223100621 The objective of this research entitled “An Analysis of code switching and code mixing in English subject at eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Anyer” were to find out what types of code switching and code mixing by an English teacher and students at XI science-one class based on Hoffman‟s theory occurred in teaching and learning process and to find out the reasons why teacher and students switch and mix their language. It was carried out SMAN 1 Anyer in 2014. In this research, the researcher used qualitative method. The data of this research were gathered by doing observation, transcription, and interview. It was obtained from the process of English teaching and learning in English subject class. The findings of the research showed that: the teacher and students tended to use intra-sentential code mixing seemed to be the most frequent type of mixing that occurred in the learning process (35%), the second type was inter-sentential (CS) (30%), the third was emblematic code switching (17%), the fourth was establishing code switching (9%), the fifth was involving the change of pronunciation (7%), and the last frequent type is intra-lexical code mixing (2%). The reasons why the teacher and students used code switching and code mixing included: Talking about a particular topic, being emphatic about something (express solidarity), interjection (inserting sentence fillers or sentence connectors), repetition used for clarification, expressing group identity, and because of real lexical need.
