Abstract

This research aimed at (1) identifying students’ learning need of writing narrative text for eighth grade at SMP Negeri 3 Kota Serang, and (2) developing appropriate materials for eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Kota Serang. This is a Research and Development study (R&D). The subject of this study was students of SMP Negeri 3 Kota Serang. The research procedure was simplified and modified the steps from Borg and Gall (1983:775) and Jolly and Bolitho (in Tomlinson, 1998). The steps were conducting the needs analysis, writing the course grid, developing the first draft, getting the first expert judgment and evaluating the first draft, revising the first draft of the comic material, getting the expert judgment and evaluating the second draft/ main product, and implement the material. The instruments to collect data were the needs analysis questionnaire, interview, and expert judgment questionnaire. Students’ needs analysis was analyzed through percentage, while the expert judgment was analyzed using mean and converted through descriptive analysis. Meanwhile, the interview of teacher was analyzed through qualitative data analysis Based on the study, the researcher found that students had difficulties in writing sentence and word, while teacher had difficulty in providing the balanced level material. Both teacher and students wanted specific activities that the developed material based on their preference in the form of course grid which contains 3 units of comic material. Using Photoshop, researcher developed the printed material by designing layout and storyboarding, sketching the character, and drawing and writing the activity. According to the result of the first evaluation by two expert judgments, the material was in range “fair”, “good” and “very good”. After revised, the result of second evaluation was in range “very good”. The material was appropriate to be implemented by teacher and students.
