Abstract

THE INFLUENCE OF USING SKIMMING TECHNIQUE TOWARD STUDENTS’ READING ABILITY IN IDENTIFYING MAIN IDEA AT EIGHTH GRADE OF SMPN 1 PANDEGLANG By OFI NURUL SAFITRI 102373 ABSTRACT The most students still have difficulties in identifying main idea of paragraph. They have to read the text over and over in order to get the general understanding of the text. Answering question that are based on reading a long text will be time consuming if they use inappropriate technique. There are some techniques to make students easier to answer the text, such as skimming technique. The objective of this research was to find out the influence of using Skimming technique toward students’ reading ability in identifying main idea at the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Pandeglang. This research used quantitative approach with quasi experimental design as a method of the research. The researcher conducted two meeting using Skimming technique as a treatment in experimental class. The instrument used by the researcher was reading test. After collecting the data, the researcher analyzed them by using t-test. The result of this research shows the significant influence of students’ reading ability in identifying main idea on experimental group was significant. It can be seen from the result of t-test. The researcher got the result from significance test or t is 2.545, while, the t table is 1.658. It shown that t count i is higher than t (2.545 > 1.658). Therefore, the null hypothesis is refused and the alternative hypothesis is received. So, it can be concluded that there is a significant influence of students’ reading ability in identifying main idea by using Skimming technique at the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Pandeglang.
