Abstract

Severe water-related disasters occur in Japan almost yearly due to typhoons and frontal rains. In this paper, a rainfall runoff and flood inundation model was applied to the Showgawar River in order to evaluate the several flood situation including a probale maximum flood inundation (PMFI). Also, flood control ca- pacity by a newly constructed Toga Dam was evaluated by numerical simulations. As a result, it was found that the flood control by the Toga Dam would cause a 24 % decrease in the flood inundation volume and area at the initial stage of the inundation for the historical largest flood event and a 18% decrease in the flood inundation area and a 22 % decrease in the volume at the initial stage of the inundation for the PMFI. However, the reservoir storage level in the Toga Dam reached to the Surcharge water level during the PMFI event, so that the flood control capacity was significantly reduced after this timing
