Abstract

This research was carried out to find out type and the source of error made by eleventh grade students of SMK Ayuda Husada Tangerang in using relative pronouns (who, whom, which, whose) in adjective clause. The method used in this research was case study included as qualitative research. The data was presented in descriptive analysis way and the procedure of Error Analysis used is according to Gass and Selinker theory. The instruments of this research were document, questionnaire, and interview. The result of the study showed that there were the highest-three and the lowest-three errors made by the students. The highest-three common errors are misuse of relative pronoun in noun phrase which has 173 errors or 35.38%, misordered of adjective clause in word order which has 82 or 16.77%, and addition of object pronoun in noun phrase which has 45 or 9.2%. Furthermore, the three lowest students’ errors in using relative pronouns were agreement of subject and verb in verb phrase which has 1 or 0.2%, misordered of subject and verb in word order which has 2 or 0.41%, and addition of verb in verb phrase which has 6 or 1.23%. Futhermore, the sources of errors identified in this research were intralingual transfer with percentage 60%, interlingual transfer with percentage 24% and context of learning with percentage 16%. It can be concluded that most of the eleventh grade students of SMK Ayuda Husada Tangerang have not mastered yet in using relative pronouns of adjective clauses especially in using relative pronoun whose.
