Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out (1) the type of error which frequently made by the first grade students of SMPN 4 Kota Serang in their writing descriptive text and (2) the causes of errors in students’ writing descriptive text. In this research, the researcher used qualitative method to analyze and describe the data. The researcher used content analysis as a design. To get the data, the researcher used students’ document and questionnaire. The students’ document was descriptive text that students made and the questionnaire consisted of 10 open-ended questions. Both instruments were given to 35 of C class students in the first grade of SMPN 4 Kota Serang. The result of the research showed that there were 132 errors committed by the students. The error was classified through surface strategy taxonomy which divided into four types; omission, addition, misordering and misformation. Omission was the highest type of error that student made which had 60 or 45% total errors. Besides that, the researcher found the factor that caused students made errors were inter-lingual transfer, intra-lingual transfer and communication strategies.
