Abstract

The objectives of this research is to describe the process of debate technique used by the teacher, to find out the debate impacts in enhancing students’ speaking skill and to describe the students of ECDC SMKN 1 Pandeglang’ attitudes in practicing debate. ECDC or English Conversation Debating Club, is an English club which concerns about debating in English. There were three students as subjects in this research. The subjects were chosen based on the highest participation in debating practice in English Conversation Debating Club to get the valid data. The research found that teacher applied a new variant of implementing Asian Parliamentary Debate System. Variant of implementing debate is the way that the teacher used out of the well-known rule of debate. The teacher gave less or more casebuilding time for the students. It is flexible based on the motion they debate about. Finally, this implementation gives positive impact for the students. They could be more confident and familiar with limited time. Debate activities also has been useful in enhancing students’ speaking ability e.g., grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and pronunciation. It is indicated by students’ speaking scores (oral proficiency score with 1-5 score). Students’ scores are 3-5 point for each aspect. The attitudes of students in practicing debate also improve their speaking such as; discussed, communicate, and respon using English. Finally, it is concluded that debate activities give more chance for students to speak and help them to enhance their speaking skill.
