Abstract

INGRIT PINONDANG SITORUS. 2018. The Effectiveness of Nutgrass root (Cyperus rotundus L.) Extract as an Anesthesia on Closed System Transportation of Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Supervised by ARIS MUNANDAR and MAS BAYU SYAMSUNARNO. Closed system transportation is one of the fish transportation that is often using in Tilapia. Application of anesthetics during closed system transportation is used to reduce the metabolic activity of fish during transportation. MS-222 is an anesthetic commonly used for fish transportation. Disadvantage of these anesthetics is leave a residue in the body of the fish. Therefore the use of nutgrass root extract as anesthetics is used as substitute of MS-222. The aims of this study to determine the optimal concentration of nutgrass root extract (Cyperus rotundus L.) and the optimal unconscious and conscious time of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) on closed system transportation. The study was conducted from April – July 2018 at the Aquaculture Laboratory of Fisheries Department, Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University. The result showed that phytochemical nutsgrass extract contain of flavonoid, phenolics hydroquinones, tannins, saponins, tested triterpen, and, steroid. The optimum concentration for anesthetic of tilapia is 6700 ppm with unconscious time is 83 minutes and conscious time is 10 minutes and the survival rate reached 100% for 48 hours. The haematological parameters and water quality in this study was not affect to physiological conditions of fish before and after transportation. Keywords : Anesthetics, fish transportation, saponins.
