Abstract

The aims of this study was to find out whether there is any effect of using audiobooks towards students’ listening skill for junior high school students at SMPN 6 Serang. The researcher used quantitative research design that is quasi experimental design with experimental and control group pretest and posttest. The population of this research was 9th grade of SMPN 6 Serang. The sample of this research was the students of IX A as experimental class and IX D as control class. The experimental class consisted of 29 and control class consisted of 34 students. The classes were chosen by cluster random sampling from nine classes. In collecting the data, the researcher conducted pre-test and post-test. Pre-test was given to th e classes before treatment. Then treatment was given only to experimental class for four meetings. Post-test was given to the classes after treatment. In analyzing the data, the researcher used T-test. The result of the calculation showed that in significance degree 5% is tcount (32.035) is higher than ttable (2.00). It means the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and it can be seen that the average gained score of the experimental class is higher than those of control class. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is significances effect on the students’ listening skill through audiobooks in teaching listening to narrative text at the Junior high school level. Furthermore, this media can be an alternative media for English in teaching learning process especially in listening skill. Keywords: Audiobook, EFL Study, Listening Skill, Education, Learning Media

Additional Information: Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah ada pengaruh penggunaan audiobook terhadap keterampilan menyimak siswa SMPN 6 Serang. Peneliti menggunakan desain penelitian kuantitatif yaitu quasi eksperimen design dengan eksperimen dan control group pretest and posttest. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas 9 SMPN 6 Serang. Sampel penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas IX A sebagai kelas eksperimen dan kelas IX D sebagai kelas kontrol. Kelas eksperimen terdiri dari 29 siswa dan kelas kontrol terdiri dari 34 siswa. Kelas dipilih secara random cluster sampling dari sembilan kelas. Dalam mengumpulkan data, peneliti melakukan pre-test dan post-test. Pre-test diberikan kepada kelas sebelum perlakuan. Kemudian perlakuan hanya diberikan pada kelas eksperimen selama empat kali pertemuan. Post-test diberikan kepada kelas-kelas setelah perlakuan. Dalam menganalisis data, peneliti menggunakan T-test. Hasil perhitungan menunjukkan bahwa pada taraf signifikansi 5% thitung (32,035) lebih besar dari ttabel (2,00). Artinya hipotesis nol (H0) ditolak dan hipotesis alternatif (Ha) diterima dan terlihat bahwa rata-rata skor yang diperoleh kelas eksperimen lebih tinggi daripada kelas kontrol. Oleh karena itu, dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap keterampilan menyimak siswa melalui buku audio dalam pembelajaran menyimak teks naratif di tingkat SMP. Lebih jauh lagi, media ini dapat menjadi alternatif bahasa Inggris dalam belajar-mengajar, khususnya dalam keterampilan menyimak.
