Abstract
This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the use Memrise application toward students’ motivation to learn English vocabulary among 8th-grade students of SMPN 24 Serang. The researcher used quantitative research with quasi-experimental methods. This study involved two classes, namely the experimental class, classes were selected with purposive sampling technique, which consisted of 36 students, and the control class, which consisted of 33 students. This study found that using the Memrise application effectively increased the motivation to learn English vocabulary for grade 8 students of SMPN 24 Serang. The results showed the significance value of the post-test from the questionnaire and behavioral observation for the experimental and control classes with a sig (2-tailed) was 0.000, which means <0.05. The effect size of the questionnaire and behavioral observation results was 4,42, included in the high effect size criteria. That shows the alternative hypothesis was accepted, which means the Memrise application effectively motivates students to learn English vocabulary in the 8th-grade students of SMPN 24 Serang with a high effect size. Peneliti menggunakan penelitian kuantitatif dengan metode eksperimen semu. Penelitian ini melibatkan dua kelas yaitu kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol, kelas dipilih dengan teknik purposive sampling yang terdiri dari 36 siswa, dan kelas kontrol yang terdiri dari 33 siswa. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa penggunaan aplikasi Memrise secara efektif meningkatkan motivasi belajar kosakata bahasa Inggris siswa kelas 8 SMPN 24 Serang. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan nilai signifikansi post-test dari angket dan observasi perilaku untuk kelas eksperimen dan kontrol dengan sig (2-tailed) adalah 0,000 yang berarti < 0,05. Effect size kuesioner dan hasil observasi perilaku adalah 4,42, termasuk dalam kriteria high effect size. Itu menunjukkan hipotesis alternatif diterima, yang berarti aplikasi Memrise efektif memotivasi siswa untuk belajar kosa kata bahasa Inggris pada siswa kelas 8 SMPN 24 Serang dengan ukuran efek tinggi.
