Abstract
In an incinerator combustion process, an exothermic process occurs where hydrocarbons and oxygen combine to produce heat, carbon dioxide (CO2), and water vapor. However, in general, the combustion process that occurs is an incomplete combustion process which will then produce harmful exhaust emissions. The incomplete combustion process will produce harmful gases including carbon monoxide (CO), which occurs due to an imbalance in the reaction between hydrocarbons and oxygen. In this study, the author uses an electrostatic precipitator which functions to filter the exhaust gases produced by the incinerator. Incinerator serves as a tool to destroy waste through combustion in a controlled system and isolated from the surrounding environment. Tests are carried out to measure how much exhaust emissions can be filtered by an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) and compare with combustion without using an ESP. The results of this study indicate that ESP can reduce emissions coming out of the incinerator by 41% in filtering carbon monoxide (CO), 18% in filtering hydrocarbons (HC), and 11% in filtering carbon monoxide (CO2). The value of oxygen (O2) increases by 8% when the ESP is on.
