Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is carried out to describe the linguistic features of Motherese based on Elliot’s theory in teaching and learning process that is used at pre-school aged children of EvFiA Land School Cilegon. The objectives of this research are to describe the linguistic features of motherese based on syntactic and discourse features used by the teacher. The research methodology is qualitative research through descriptive analysis design. The researcher also employs quantitative method in minor ways to strengthen the explanation that has been made in words. The subject of this research is the language used by the teacher in teaching and learning process at kindergarten B class of EvFiA Land School Cilegon. The instruments used in data collection are observation, interview, and documentation. Based on the result and discussion of this research, the researcher found there are some linguistic features of Motherese based on syntactic features that appear in the language used: shorter MLU, minimization on the use of function words, modifiers and sub clause, and more content words in the language used. But the use of more verbless sentence than verb form sentence does not appear. It was also found some linguistic features of Motherese based on discourse features of the use less repetition, more interrogative and imperative sentences. From the analysis, it is also found that the teacher speaks less fluent but still intelligible. These findings could be used as input for the teacher about the linguistics features that are appropriate to be used for teaching and learning process for pre-school aged children.
