Abstract

In the braking system, there are several important components, one of which is the brake pads. In general, the brake lining material uses asbestos, but this component has carcinogenic properties and can pollute the environment. To overcome this impact, the brake lining material uses organic materials, one of which is bamboo. The bamboo used in this study was betung bamboo (Dendrocallamus asper). The purpose of this study was to measure the thermal stability of the organic brake linings that were developed, analyze the surface morphology formed during the wear test, and compare the performance of the organic brake linings that were developed with the brake linings on the market. In composite brake linings using bamboo as a filler, the composition is composed of 35% bamboo filler, 5% nylon fiber, and 60% epoxy resin. The powder metallurgy method is used to create composites. The tests carried out were wear tests, microstructure tests, and thermal stability tests. In the wear test, the specimen experienced abrasive wear. Bamboo brake linings are superior in hardness tests and wear tests. Key words : Composite, wear, brake pads, friction
